HOW GOOD IS IT: This product is just coming to market and has not been tested yet by Tech Toy Playground (there are no other reviews yet posted to Samsung's website). From initial indications this will be THE television to knock the socks off your friends and neighbors. From the first glance everyone will know it is different owing to the curved screen like you find in the fancier movie theaters. Curved screens are possible with OLED displays (remember the predictions of roll-up TV's?) and the technology has been in development for many years. The first OLED commercially sold was the Sony XEL-1 back in late 2007 which had an 11" screen and sold for about $2500. They only made about 1000 of them. Larger sizes were predicted but manufacturer's were hampered with major challenges when they tried to crank out larger sizes.
Among the S9C's firsts is being the first television to feature MultiView, a technology that two users can watch different Full HD (even 3D) content at the same time by way of the two pairs of included 3D Active glasses, which sport built-in speakers. That feature alone is enough to make me want one of these today.
SIMILAR TO: nothing. LG is also introducing a 55" OLED model for a lot more but it is a traditional flat form-factor.DO YOU NEED IT: Yes, almost 10-Grand is a lot to pay for a TV but there are already models selling for only a few thousand less that have much less "wow" appeal. If the price is in your budget, being the first on your block with a curved TV would be hard to top.
HOW IT IMPACTS YOU: this model represents a major technology leap on several fronts. Suddenly the barriers against making and selling larger sized OLED TV's at a reasonable price are dissolving. At $9999.99 ($8999.99 on sale at Samsung Direct) the price is affordable for early adopters and yet is fully compatible with current TV standards. That's important because there are some other new TV's boasting super high resolutions that so far lack anything to watch on them. In the right environment the S9C can bring visual excitement to a tech-forward décor and assure being a step ahead of the Jones for at least a couple of years.
