Tactical Laser-Guided Pizza Cutter
WHAT IS IT: A precision pizza cutter
NEW, FUTURE or RETRO: New
PREVIEW or REVIEW: Preview
HOW GOOD IT IS: I didn't test one of these yet, I'm still waiting for someone to give me one as a gift. I was a little disappointed that it didn't actually cut your pizza with a laser beam, simultaneously sealing the edge of each slice to keep the cheese from oozing off. No, it's really just a standard pizza cutter with a cool laser light mounted on top to assure accurate cuts. But that shouldn't stand in the way of seeing your friends' jaws drop next time you have a pizza party.
HOW WELL DOES IT WORK: From the seller's description it looks like this is a well-made pizza cutter and the price is in line with a high-end pizza cutter at the cookware stores. It's made of Zinc-alloy body with 3 1/2" diameter stainless-steel blade so it should last quite a while.
SIMILAR TO: As far as I know this is a total one-of-a-kind item. Get one before they're gone!
DO YOU NEED IT: Duh! You should be able to answer that question without any help from the Tech Toy Wizard. If you want it then you must need it and you'll never be able to eat pizza again until you own one.

HOW IT IMPACTS YOU: There's a lot to be said about being the first in your circle of friends to own the last future-tech gizmo and it's probably a safe bet that show-off Charlie down the street doesn't have one of these in his kitchen ... yet.
COMMENTS: The manufacturer notes that this is not dishwasher safe. They don't say but it can be assumed it is also a choking hazard so please cut your pizza BEFORE you stuff it in your mouth.

Anker Ultra Slim case for iPad Mini
WHAT IS IT: Ultra Slim case for iPad Mini
NEW, FUTURE or RETRO: New
PREVIEW or REVIEW: Review
HOW GOOD IT IS: I have looked at and/or tested many cases for the iPad and iPad Mini (a comprehensive comparison is in the works) and regardless of brand, price or style this is my favorite.
It complements the engineering Apple put into making the iPad, particularly the Mini, ultra thin and ultra light but adding the absolute minimum to the iPad's thickness and weight. The hard, rigid construction adds protection for the iPad's screen and case and actually makes it easier to hold, especially when using the tablet as an e-reader. Despite costing a fraction of most similar cases I simply would not use my iPad Mini without it.
There are no complicated latches or folds, just open the case and set it at the angle that's convenient for you |
HOW WELL DOES IT WORK:
- It is truly the thinnest case I have seen, even thinner than Apple’s own case. But no protection is given up; the front and back covers are very hard and sturdy. I keep it on my iPad over 95% of the time, only removing it for those times I use my keyboard folio case for travel.
- The iPad snaps into a full-perimeter frame that holds it very tightly, yet the tablet may be removed with little effort.
- The front cover is lined with a soft felt material and is rigid enough to be able to hold the iPad like a paperback book.
- The iPad can be securely adjusted to a reasonable range of horizontal angles however there is no way to prop it up vertically.
- The PU leather (plastic) exterior is deeply textured for a definite non-slip grip.
- The case is no-nonsense and business-like. There is a lot to be said for not attracting attention to the fact that you’re carrying an expensive tablet.
- The automatic sleep/wake function works flawlessly on a case like this. Need to take a break from reading an e-book? Close the cover. When you reopen the cover you can pick up just where you left off.
Hold just like a book when used as an e-reader |
In addition to the above a plus for me is that the case only has two hinge points which is both stylish and practical. The front cover may be folded 180 degrees around the back, still not adding an objectionable amount of thickness. I’ve developed a “trick” of inserting my forefinger between the two covers both in the horizontal and vertical positions which keeps helps me hold the case with more stability than any other case I’ve tried.
At the time I reviewed it the normal selling price on Amazon was under $10. Of any of the cases I have seen under $40 this is the one I like the best and it would be the first I would recommend for the price. It truly compliments I Pad’s extreme thinness and lightness while adding the least bulk and weight as possible but still managing to offer a high degree of basic protection to the tablet.
SIMILAR TO: Too many to list, there are cases made of plastic, silicone, leather, fake leather, etc. Choosing the right case is a very personal decision, it has to "feel right" to you. This Anker case feels perfect to me.
DO YOU NEED IT: Cases of every variety for the iPad and other tablets are now everywhere you look, ranging from under $10 to as high as $150. There are an endless number of styles and gimmicks to make practically everyone happy.
HOW IT IMPACTS YOU: You paid $400 or more for your new iPad Mini. You bought it because of how light and slim it is. But you want to protect it from scratches and other damage so you need a case. Most tablet cases add significant bulk and weight and have complicated latches and hinges and are more trouble to use than they should be. The Anker case may be everything you want and need and it won't cost you a ton of money to buy.
I hold it with my index finger between the front and back covers |
COMMENTS:
- You likely will be happier with two cases … one ultra-slim for basic protection against scratches at home and commuting and another more rugged case for travel, especially if you have to pack the device in a carry-on bag.
- A good ultra-slim can be held like a paperback for reading and set at an angle on a desk for watching videos. It should permit popping the tablet in and out easily but not too easily so it doesn’t fall out.
- The more rugged case ideally would have a thin Bluetooth keyboard built in to add versatility to your tablet. Those cases are often called “folios”.
- The inside front cover should be free of any pockets, flaps, rivets or anything else that could press against the device’s screen. Ideally it would be a soft, non-scratching felt.
- The outer case should have a non-slip surface to safeguard against it slipping out of your hand.

Kensington KeyFolio Pro with Bluetooth Keyboard for iPad Air
NEW, FUTURE or RETRO: New
PREVIEW or REVIEW: Review
HOW GOOD IT IS: This case is beautiful. It is constructed of real sheepskin leather, the keyboard is all metal and very solidly built and has a nice touchtype “feel” to it, the case offers excellent protection for the iPad Air and there is no fussy setup required, just open it and use it.
Sharkk Mini Boombox
WHAT IS IT: Mini boombox Bluetooth speaker
NEW, FUTURE or RETRO: New
PREVIEW or REVIEW: Review
HOW GOOD IT IS: The speaker feels solid, and is almost identical to the Bose and Jambox in size and shape. There are inputs and the power switch arranged neatly along the side and a LOT of identical buttons on top that are virtually impossible to read under most conditions. The front and rear are covered in a nice speaker cloth while the rest of the case feels like a hard composite material of some type. It feels like it would survive a lot of abuse.

Surround sound multimedia speaker
WHAT IS IT: Boston Acoustics TVee One TV Speaker Base
NEW, FUTURE or RETRO: Very new
PREVIEW or REVIEW: review
HOW GOOD IT IS: I looked for something like this recently and no matter where I searched for I couldn't find one. Sure there were plenty of sound bars but not something intended to put a full-size LED TV on and get all of the benefits and effects of a sound bar.
Mini Bluetooth boombox/speakerphone
WHAT IS IT: Anker Portable Bluetooth Speaker
NEW, FUTURE or RETRO: Very new
PREVIEW or REVIEW: review
HOW GOOD IT IS: I have an ever-growing arsenal of small Bluetooth speakers in every room of the house. Although my home entertainment system can get Bluetooth from my smartphone or iPad I prefer the Logitech speaker I keep on the endtable next to where I sit. Of all of my Bluetooth speakers it is the oldest one and still my favorite for playing quick audio clips for friends and family.
Anker® Ultra Slim Mini Bluetooth 3.0 Wireless Keyboard
Anker keyboard shown with Anker aluminum multi-angle stand for tablets and smartphones |
WHAT IS IT: Bluetooth Apple-compatible mini keyboard
NEW, FUTURE or RETRO: Very new
PREVIEW or REVIEW: review
HOW GOOD IT IS: I have just found my new favorite Bluetooth keyboard and it’s from the folks at Anker.
This is my sixth Bluetooth keyboard so far and by a wide measure the first that has the feel of a full-sized desktop keyboard. The keys themselves are very large, with what I would consider an ideal keystroke (the amount of travel from touch to execution). They have absolutely no particular sweet spot, which is exactly what you want in a keyboard … tap the key in the center, edge, corner, it doesn’t make any difference, the feel is perfect every time.

Leviton TS830 USB wall outlet
WHAT IS IT: USB AC wall outlet
NEW, FUTURE or RETRO: new
PREVIEW or REVIEW: review
HOW GOOD IT IS: There are two places in my house that always seem to be where I need to plug in some sort of USB device, either to use it temporarily or to give it a quick charge. One place is next to my favorite chair in the den and the other is in the bathroom so the device is ready to go when I head out the door. Neither place is where I would routinely charge my devices. The kinds of devices I’m talking about can range from smartphone to tablet to Bluetooth headset to Bluetooth speaker to car GPS. Life got a whole lot easier when I discovered the existence of USB wall outlets. I now have them installed in both places
3M™ Mobile Projector MP410
WHAT IS IT: Ultra tiny video projector
NEW, FUTURE or RETRO: new
PREVIEW or REVIEW: review
HOW GOOD IT IS: There are a few things about this projector that don't immediately sink in to the brain when you first see it pictured on this page.
First, it's hard to appreciate how EXTREMELY small it is from the photo. It is impossibly small! Ridiculously small! Having given business presentations for which I had to lug a projector the size of a suitcase with me, I would have given anything for a projector this small.
The other thing that seems like just another spec on

Chamberlain MyQ internet gateway
WHAT IS IT: Check and control your garage door from anywhere
NEW, FUTURE or RETRO: new
PREVIEW or REVIEW: review
HOW GOOD IT IS: When I bought my current garage door opener it had a feature called MyQ. I had no idea what that meant, but I bought it anyway. A couple of years later I bought a car with MyQ button in the control panel and quickly learned I could program one to open my garage door. Woohoo, no more remote stuck to the sun visor!
When this product was introduced I went through a similar period of head scratching. Would it work with my door opener? What would it do? How well would it do it? Would I need an electrician to install it? Here's what I learned. The product literature stresses that it
Anker 25W 5V - 5-Port Wall Charger
WHAT IS IT: 5-port dedicated smartphone/tablet power charger
NEW, FUTURE or RETRO: new and hotPREVIEW or REVIEW: review
HOW GOOD IT IS: One of the things Anker excels at, as a young new company,
is thinking outside of the box and seeing solutions where no one else has even
seen the challenges yet.
Case in point, this 5 port device charger. I have a place in my house that I have designated my “charging area”. It is a section of countertop that is relatively unused, with an outlet that is rarely used, and in a convenient place to grab whatever is charging and dash out the door in the morning. Even with such ideal conditions I usually end up not charging more than 2 devices at a time. But it seems every day I am acquiring more and more things that need to be regularly charged. Let’s count: smartphone (every night); tablet (every night); pocket camera (several times a week); Bluetooth headset (several times a week); stereo Bluetooth headphones (several times a week); Bluetooth speakerphone (several times a week); and more. And that’s only me, and does not include other members of the household. Each of these devices charges optimally with certain currant parameters, so it is usually safest to use the OEM power-brick that came with the device. That ends up with a rat’s nest of cables and transformers and always forgetting what fits what.

Sharp Talking Time
WHAT IS IT: First ELSI quartz talking time clock (1979)
NEW, FUTURE or RETRO: Retro
HOW GOOD IS IT:
When the Sharp CT 660E “Talking Time” was introduced in 1979
it represented a technological breakthrough.
It was based on the first use of LSI (large scale integration) construction as opposed to
the usual method at that time of mounting discrete components to a printed
circuit board. That made it an amazingly
sophisticated product in the consumer marketplace at that time. While there had been electro-mechanical
“talking” devices previously this was the first talking clock to synthesize an
actual human voice. Talking products had
a short-lived popularity in the 1980’s (who can forget your car insisting that
“your door is a jar”) and then for the most part faded away.
Samsung S9C 55” OLED TV
WHAT IS IT: Organic
self-emitting pixel display TV with curved screen.
NEW, FUTURE or RETRO: Brand new
PREVIEW or REVIEW: Preview
HOW GOOD IS IT: This product is just coming to market and has not been tested yet by Tech Toy Playground (there are no other reviews yet posted to Samsung's website). From initial indications this will be THE television to knock the socks off your friends and neighbors. From the first glance everyone will know it is different owing to the curved screen like you find in the fancier movie theaters. Curved screens are possible with OLED displays (remember the predictions of roll-up TV's?) and the technology has been in development for many years. The first OLED commercially sold was the Sony XEL-1 back in late 2007 which had an 11" screen and sold for about $2500. They only made about 1000 of them. Larger sizes were predicted but manufacturer's were hampered with major challenges when they tried to crank out larger sizes.
D-Link Wireless Pan and Tilt Day/Night Network Surveillance Camera

NEW, FUTURE or RETRO: new
PREVIEW or REVIEW: review
HOW GOOD IS IT: This little camera is an amazing value for the price. While many camera-based home security systems are designed to give you information after the fact, this camera will alert your smartphone if there is unusual motion activity or sounds and let you see it live, while panning, tilting and zooming to get the "best view" before you snap photos and call authorities.
